A schizophrenic homie.

“They call me moonsucker, schizophrenic motherfucker” – raps Justin Howard, known as Metazen in the track “Moonsucker” of the EP “The Conscious Cicatrix”, released in 2011. Whether he is a moon douche or not, I don’t know, as I haven’t met him personally yet. I’ll probably be smarter after Asymmetry Festival 2012, under the condition, that I manage to meet the American and chat a little and drink a small one. When it comes to the “schizophrenic motherfucker”, I’m the smarter one right now, cause I got acquainted with some of the music of this mysterious guys from California. There quite a lot of schizophrenia in it. On the other hand, on the photos, which don’t feature his tribal make-up, combining an African warrior with a comical ostentation of the musicians of Immortal, Justin looks like a person trying to keep distance from the turbulences of this world, an introvert-dreamer.    CONTINUE READING →

Genre: experimental hip-hop

The presence of Justin Howard in the line-up of this year’s edition of Asymmetry Festival, is the consequence of seeking for artists, who surpass the genre boundaries with their vision. The musician, before starting his career under the moniker Metazen for good, had a chance to perform in a few metal acts. Fascinated by the achievements of such respected names in the underground as Isis, Battle of Mice, or even Nine Inch Nails, he managed to transfer some characteristic elements of post-rock/metal – ambient passages, understiched with industrial motoric – into his new incarnation. Combined with a hip-hop sound, we receive a totally new quality, making Howard one of the most asymmetric elements in the line-up of this year’s edition of the festival.

New Year’s announcements about the Asymmetry Festival line-up

The organizers of the fourth edition of the May Asymmetry Festival, have prepared sheer mix of styles, to coincide with the beginning of the New Year. This time, the group of asymmetric artists was joined by: The Ocean – a respected Berlin-based band performing atmospheric sludge, Metazen – an avant hip-hop artists from Eastern California and acts residing in Switzerland – Coilguns (mathcore) and Kunz (noise rock).
